Mission

To inform and engage the public in making Washington State education policy more just and more effective.

Vision

Every student in Washington State has an equal and adequate opportunity to succeed in school and in life:

  1. Every child starts school ready to succeed.

  2. Every student has the good teachers, small class sizes, and extra help he or she needs to meet the new high standards in K-12.

  3. Every student who earns the opportunity for advanced training can enroll in a community college or university, with financial aid if needed.

More minorities enroll in college, but gaps remain

Enrollment of minorities in U.S. colleges has increased substantially in recent years, but not fast enough to keep up with demographic changes.

Between 1995 and 2005, total minority enrollment on U.S. campuses rose 50%, to 5 million students.

Report: Reading First Impact Study

This preliminary study found that, on average, children in Reading First programs are not reading any better than those who are not. The final report on Reading First is due in 2009 and will include an additional year of data.
